Find out what questions you need to ask your kitchen fitter.
When you embark on any home improvement project, you will want to use professional tradespeople who are reliable, trustworthy and who will complete the work to a high standard.
Choosing the best person for the job can be a bit daunting if you haven’t got any personal recommendations from neighbours, friends or family. There are many, many tradespeople out there. Some are great at what they do, others are mediocre, and a few will create more problems than they solve, and so are best to avoid!
If you are about to start a kitchen renovation, you will want to choose a kitchen fitter that will deliver what they promise to make your dream kitchen a reality.
Getting satisfactory answers to these questions below may help you feel more confident that you are making the right choice of kitchen fitter.
It is always a good idea to check the credentials of your kitchen fitter and it is not unreasonable to ask to view their portfolio, whether it be on their website, social media profile, or just some photos of previous jobs.
You could also check out any online reviews left by previous customers as this will give you some idea on the level of service the fitter has provided to other customers in the past.
Reviews on trade directories such as Checkatrade and Trust a Trader are independent reviews made by customers, and these are checked and verified by the trade association, so you can feel confident that these are a true reflection of previous customer’s experiences. You may also come across some reviews on Google, Facebook or other social platforms, and these also will provide some insight as to how the tradesperson works and the quality of workmanship delivered.
One of the most important questions to ask your kitchen fitter is when they can start and how the long the job will take to complete. Once you have a confirmed delivery date for your kitchen, you will likely want work to start immediately as you won’t want to store another kitchen for weeks on end. You also won’t want your kitchen to be out of action for too long, so having a completion date will help you to plan how to live around the kitchen renovation and manage mealtimes.
Kitchen fitters will price the job in different ways. Some may give you an all-in price that includes materials and labour, whilst others may charge a flat day rate for labour and add the materials on top. You need to consider the number of days the job will take if on a day rate, and you may need to make an agreement on this prior to the fitter starting so labour costs don’t run over budget.
Some kitchen fitters are more experienced with certain brands than others, and no two kitchen brands are alike. This is particularly true of local kitchen fitters who may have fitted B&Q, Wickes or Howdens kitchens, but may have no experience of more specialised brands.
Depending on whether you are reconfiguring an old kitchen, installing a kitchen into a new space, or just giving your existing kitchen a makeover, you may need to consider moving electric sockets or plumbing to accommodate your new kitchen design. Not all kitchen fitters are qualified to work on electrics or plumbing, so you may need to consider getting in an electrician or plumber in to complete some of the work. It is best to find this out before the project starts, as it may cause a hold up if you have to find someone midway through.
It can be costly to dispose of commercial waste at recycling centres, so your kitchen fitter may not have included this in the kitchen installation quote. They may hire a skip for you and this could be included in the price, but it is best to check as you may have to organise this yourself.
If you have chosen a reputable kitchen fitter, they should offer you a cast iron guarantee to come back and put right any problems that have materialised since installation, without fuss or extra charges. But don’t just take their word for it, get it in writing before the job starts!
