A Useful Guide to Kitchen Extractors

A kitchen extractor creates a fresher kitchen.

Cooker hoods provide an invaluable service by removing smoke, steam, grease, and odours from the air – leaving you with a much fresher kitchen.

Also, by reducing the steam and heat rising from your hob, they make cooking easier.

In recent years, there have been some stunning innovations in methods of extraction and the design of extractors. Currently, the two most common types of extractors are extraction hoods and recirculation hoods.

Extraction hoods

This type of extractor takes air and directs it outside through a duct. No air is recirculated back into the kitchen.

It’s a simple and effective method. However, an extractor hood can be noisy as power is needed to push the air through the duct. You also need to factor in a route for the duct – it helps if the hood is positioned on an external wall.

Recirculation hoods

Recirculation hoods push air through filters that remove cooking smells. The filters cleanse the air, and it’s then recirculated back into the kitchen.

Recirculation hoods often have grease and charcoal filters that combine to remove grease, smoke, and odours from the air. The filters need to be replaced regularly.

Chimney cooker hoods

If your cooker backs onto a wall, a chimney cooker with a canopy can offer powerful extraction.

This can become an attractive design feature if the chimney and canopy are made from stainless steel or glass.

Visor cooker hoods

Visor hoods are traditional extractors that stick out horizontally from the wall above the hob. Nowadays, these tend to be small glass or plastic visors.

They’re still often used in smaller kitchens and effectively draw air from above a small hob. These types of hoods are practical and affordable.

Integrated hoods

You can hide integrated hoods in fitted kitchens as they’re built into cabinets. They’re turned on by pulling a handle or pressing a switch.

You can have either extraction or recirculation integrated hoods.

Island hoods

As the name suggests, island hoods fit seamlessly into an island or can be suspended above a kitchen island hob. If they sit above the island, they can be integrated into the ceiling for a seamless look or suspended above the cooker to create a stylish focal point.

There are extraction models; however, the current trend is for recirculation hoods that blend in with the island.

Ceiling cooker hoods

Ceiling cooker hoods offer efficient extraction from the highest point of the ceiling. Fumes are extracted from the whole of the kitchen rather than just the hob.

Ceiling cooker hoods work well in open plan kitchens where cooking fumes and odours circulate around the room.

Downdraft extractors

Downdraft extractors are increasingly popular and can be installed below a kitchen worktop or behind a hob. They sit flush when not in use and rise to extract air when you’re cooking.

Downdrawn extractors are ideal as part of a minimalist kitchen design as they’re so unobtrusive. They draw steam horizontally and pull it down through the filters below the worksurface. They’re not recommended for gas hobs.
